College Football Rankings, Week 8

Updated rankings through Week 8. These ranking are used in Ken Massey’s composite ratings.

Rankings are representative of on-field results only; no preseason information or future projections are used. As a result teams may move a lot week to week, especially early in the season.

Early Playoff Outlook

Champions from the SEC, Big Ten, and ACC are in great shape to secure a playoff bid. The PAC12 has a slight edge over the Big XII at the moment for the 4th spot, and their championship game would help sway the odds further in their favor, especially if it is Washington at 13-0. Boise State and Western Michigan should still be in the conversation if they each run the table, but they would likely lose out to 1-loss Power 5 champions; it will get very interesting if the committee has to decide between say 13-0 Boise State and 11-2 Colorado for the 4th spot. We’re still 16 days away from the first official CFP rankings, and as we saw yesterday a lot can change week to week. Realistically, every unbeaten team and every Power 5 team with 1 loss is still in the conversation (which currently adds up to 14 teams) for a playoff spot. Some two-loss P5 teams could work their way in with a lot of outside help, but those scenarios are too far-fetched to be worth discussing today. The 14 contenders are all of the Top 11 below, and Utah, Baylor, and Florida.
