FINAL Bracket 2016

This is my final submission for the 2016 Bracket Matrix.

The only spot I feel might be a stretch is having George Washington in over USC. Comparing these side by side it looks like GW’s top three wins are better than USC’s top three: Virginia, at VCU, and Seton Hall for GW compared to Arizona, Colorado, and at UCLA for USC. Comparing losses gives USC the edge in quality, but they also have two more than GW and each played 33 games. Strength of schedule goes to USC, which ranks 40th in my data compared to GW at 85th. For common opponents, both played Lafayette in the non-conference; USC won by 36 whereas GW won by 9. Lafayette went 6-24 on the year, so it’s tough to use them as any sort of barometer. At any rate, I’m glad that my bracket has at least this one component to differentiate it from the rest of the matrix. It’ll help separate mine from the field one way or the other.

College Basketball Bracket 3/13/16

Bracket for games through 3/12/16; bracket seeding for use in the Bracket Matrix.

This version will be almost exactly what my final bracket will show. The only changes I can foresee are if Michigan St has a convincing win today then they might take Oregon’s place on the top line, and if Memphis wins they would replace Cincinnati. Arkansas-Little Rock would not earn an at-large if they lose today.

Outliers

I’m not going to have USC in the field. I implore everyone to look at their resume and point to anything that says they should replace any of the last four at-large teams. I will not have St Mary’s in the field; though less of an outlier in the matrix I feel this one could go either way. The two teams replacing USC and St Mary’s are Vanderbilt and George Washington.

College Basketball Bracket 3/12/16

Bracket for games through 3/11/16; bracket seeding for use in the Bracket Matrix.

It looks a little bit weird today because some teams that are unlikely to win their conference are coming off of big wins yesterday and their rating is slightly inflated since they haven’t lost yet. My data does not project forward at all; it gives results as if there are no more games remaining so teams like Georgia and Michigan appear a bit higher than their rating will reflect tomorrow if they don’t keep winning.

I’m going to have two more updates before the selection show: one Sunday morning and one right after the last game finishes on Sunday.

Once again I’ll give an overview of the race for the top seeds as well as the bubble watch.

Oklahoma, Miami FL,  and Xavier fell out of contention for a 1 seed. Kansas might already have theirs locked up, so long as they don’t lose big to West Virginia. The ACC champion will definitely earn a 1 seed. If Villanova wins today they’ll get a top seed. The 4th spot will either go to Michigan St if they win the Big Ten, or the PAC12 champion.

Bubble watch

American: UConn and Temple are still in the running for at-large bids if they don’t earn an autobid. Cincinnati is most likely out, though they could sneak into the First Four.

A10: St Bonaventure and George Washington didn’t do themselves any favors yesterday; both are barely clinging to bids today. VCU, St Joseph’s and Dayton are all safe.

ACC: Georgia Tech is the last team in for now. They’ll probably drop out before the selection show.

Big East: No teams on the bubble. Butler is safely in.

Big Ten: Michigan got a huge win yesterday over Big Ten champion Indiana, and have secured themselves a bid. A bad loss today could see them drop to the First Four, but their name will be called on Sunday.

Big12: Texas Tech is the first team out, though when it’s this close it could really go either way. I’d expect them to be in the field on Sunday, even if my data says otherwise.

PAC12: USC is in a similar situation to Texas Tech, except without as many strong wins on their resume. If only one of these teams gets in, it’ll be Texas Tech over USC.

SEC: I’m still not confident that I’ll get this conference pegged down before the selection show. Georgia looks wildly overseeded at the moment, but if they keep winning they’ll earn themselves a bid. Florida is barely in, and could very likely fall out today or tomorrow. Despite the loss, South Carolina is safely in. Vanderbilt should still make the field as well, though may end up in the First Four.

St Mary’s is getting closer to an at-large bid, though they still need quite a bit to happen over the next two days to move up enough. The Missouri Valley will get two bids, but no other lower-tier conference has a team in the running for an at-large selection.

College Basketball Bracket 3/11/16

Bracket for games through 3/10/16; bracket seeding for use in the Bracket Matrix.

Some shifting in seeds is due to an imbalance in scheduling i.e. a team that won moved up and a team that didn’t play moved down. This will correct itself over the next 3 days.

The battle for 1 seeds is unchanged; still looks like Big 12, ACC, Big East, and Michigan St or a 2nd bid to one of the first three or an outside chance for the PAC12.

The bubble is changing daily. I’ll try to address all relevant situations.

American: The UConn/Cincinnati game this afternoon is a de facto play-in game; the loser is very likely to be left out of the field. Right now I only have 1 team in from the AAC, but it’ll likely end up with two bids as Temple, Tulsa, and Houston are all still playing and barely below the Next Four Out.

A10: St Bonaventure, George Washington and VCU are all in must-win games today to lock up their bids. Dayton and St Joe’s should be safely in regardless of today’s outcomes.

ACC: Georgia Tech is barely clinging to a bid today, but will likely be passed over by Sunday. All other teams who are in will stay in, and teams who are out will stay out.

Big East: No teams on the bubble. Butler might be close, but should still avoid the First Four.

Big Ten: Michigan is the last team in for the moment, but will absolutely need a win today to stay in. Ohio St can play their way in, but may need to reach the finals to secure an at-large bid. Wisconsin’s loss to Nebraska dropped them a bit, but they’re safely in the field.

Big12: Texas Tech might just hang on to their spot, though they really need all of the favorites to keep winning this weekend to stay in the field.

PAC12: I have USC barely out, and with no games left to move up they must rely on others falling behind them. My data seems to be a pessimistic outlier on the Trojans, but looking at their resume it’s hard to justify that they definitely should be in.

SEC: This is a tough conference to figure out. I think Vanderbilt and South Carolina are safely in. Florida really needs to win today to feel safe. Georgia and Alabama are close, but each probably needs to get to the finals to earn an at-large bid, and even then it’s not a certainty. LSU needs the autobid to get in.

College Basketball Bracket 3/10/16

Bracket for games through 3/9/16; bracket seeding for use in the Bracket Matrix.

The losses by Syracuse and Florida St likely ended both of their chances to earn a bid. Texas Tech is now dangerously close to dropping out after a terrible loss to TCU. USC is finally in the field, but has a difficult game tonight with Utah; a win would lock up their bid but a loss keeps them on the bubble.

Florida, Georgia, and Michigan all start their chases for bids today, each likely needing multiple wins to get in the field. My data is a lot more optimistic about Georgia than any other brackets I’ve seen; perhaps they are just barely out on everyone else’s brackets too?

Oklahoma begins their pursuit of a top seed today against an Iowa St team where a win would certainly move the Sooners up a line on the bracket. Three of the 1 seeds are looking like they’ll be represented by the ACC, Big East, and Big 12, with the 4th open for Michigan St if they can win their tournament, or perhaps two bids for one of the aforementioned conferences. Oregon and Utah aren’t out of that race, but neither really feels like a 1 seed just yet.

No more autobids will be handed out until Saturday when 14 are up for grabs. The remaining 5 (American, A10, Big Ten, SEC, and Sun Belt) wait until Sunday.

Autobids in bold.

There will be lots of movement around the bubble over the next couple days. Some teams are currently in because their tournament started early (looking at you, Florida St) and will fall back out if they don’t advance far enough. Others have slightly dropped due to not yet starting their tournament. Oklahoma, for example, will climb with a few wins this week, but the 3 line is appropriate if they drop an early game.

St Mary’s loss to Gonzaga last night very likely ended their tournament chances. They are just barely out, but have no more games remaining to vault themselves up; must rely on others ahead of them losing (and nobody behind them jumping up). Valpo is too far back to get an at-large, Monmouth is even further back.

The teams I have at the 7 line or better are going to stay in regardless of an early loss. The further down the bracket, the more important it is to make a deep run in the tournament. Teams currently below the Next Four Out are going to need an autobid to be comfortably in the field.

Conference tournaments starting today: A10, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Mountain West, Pac12, and SEC.

Autobid to be awarded today: Patriot (Lehigh vs Holy Cross)

I’m still trying to work out some inconsistencies in my formulas. I don’t like having two Big East 1 seeds (really the entire Big East is being slightly overseeded in this bracket), nor do I see Florida as a tournament team just yet, though Florida can certainly play their way in even without an auto bid. Most of these issues will work themselves out prior to Selection Sunday, but my goal is to build an accurate bracket that is entirely data-generated and I sense that there’s still some work left to do to achieve that.
