BoW Merit Index: Week 12

Oregon maintains firm command of the top spot for the 4th consecutive week. An abundance of upsets has shaken the index, and there is a razor thin margin between teams in slots 3 through 6. Conference championship games in the PAC12 and SEC will be extremely important. Since the debacle in week 2, it seemed the Big Ten would certainly be shut out of the playoff, but Ohio State has crept back to the top. Would a Big Ten championship game win be enough to fend off their competition in the ACC and Big XII? Should be an exciting final 3 weeks…

BoW Merit Index: Week 11

Things got weird this week. After seeing my top 4 matching the committee’s top 4, I felt confident that my index would be valid the rest of the way. This week, however, it looks a little wonky. Some Week 12 byes will clean it up, but for now there’s a bit of noise at the top. Oregon’s margin over Baylor is as wide as the gap between number 2 and number 14, which speaks both to the lead Oregon has and to how close the race is between every other contender. The Pac12 South appears to be approaching SEC West levels of depth, as their champion could make for an interesting matchup with Oregon in December.

BoW Merit Index: Week 10

The bye week for Marshall finally dropped them in my index to a more appropriate ranking (15). Oregon takes firms command of the top spot, and the BoW top 4 is the same (different order) as the current CoFoPoff top 4. My intention is not to match what the committee selects, but to determine which teams have had the best seasons. This could often coincide with the committee’s choices, but it will be interesting to see how the index parses out, say, 7 one-loss teams at the end of the season.
